Attic Insulation Inspection Checklist

Insulation inspections are critical to ensuring that homes have the proper amount of insulation and are adequately ventilated. They can help lower energy bills, reduce the risk of ice dams in winter and improve indoor air quality.

An Coastline Insulation inspection starts with a thorough walk through the attic space to assess the current condition of the insulation. If the existing R-value is less than the recommended level for your climate, a higher R-value should be installed.

Inspect the insulation for sagging or gaps. Replace any damaged or deteriorated insulation as needed. Use a thermometer to check for temperature differences between the different areas of the home and note any drafts. Check if there is a sufficient coverage of insulation in the attic and roof spaces, especially around penetrations of the roofing system such as skylights, vents, and electrical wiring. Check the thickness of the insulation – the more insulation, the better. Make sure the insulation is secured – this can be done by either stapling the edges to wooden joists or securing with adhesive sprays or supports. Do not compress the insulation as this reduces its insulating properties.

Check for any open chase ways into the attic, drop-down soffits, and recessed can lights to ensure they are properly sealed. Check the soffit and ridge vents for debris, blockages or sagging.
